In June of 2013, I really started committed to working on daily yoga poses and challenging myself. I am obsessed with practicing inversions and stepping up to the next level. However, when I started, I had zero flexibility, no upper body strength, and I didn’t know how to properly breathe to allow my body to work on those skills daily. It was a new challenge that I wanted to take on for myself and keep myself accountable to expanding my abilities. The problem that I had with yoga is that I cannot sit still. Every time I would try to do even 15 minutes of yoga, I would get bored and frustrated with myself because I just couldn’t do it. I am not a cardio person, but I’m also not a person that can sit still and just focus on one single thing at a time. Breathing, relaxation, focus… these are all things that I just don’t have. Moms that are reading this, have you ever tried to do yoga in your living room while a child is running around and asking for everything under the sun? I swear it’s like when we go to the bathroom or pick up a phone, as SOON as I pulled out that yoga mat one of the kids needed something to stay entertained.
PiYo Live with Chalene Johnson
In September of 2012 & 2013, I went to Dana Point, CA to attend a 3 day leadership conference and on both of these occasions, I had the opportunity to try out a workout live with Chalene Johnson called PiYo (Chalene Johnson is the creator of Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Turbo Fire and Chalene Johnson). PiYo is like the the cardio junkie’s yoga. (again, I am NOT a cardio junkie, I actually loathe cardio days, but I need to move and burn calories) Let me tell you that for days after these workouts I was SORE. I couldn’t move, walk, run, sit on the toilet, you name it, I couldn’t do it. But, I loved the workout. It was an amazing experience to challenge myself with flexibility, strength, and balance, but leave the workout feeling like I just did a 60 minute cardio session. PiYo is a unique blend of pilates and yoga, focusing on strength and stretch. While you’re challenging yourself in Warrior 3, you’re instantly moving into high lunge, never leaving your body the minute to say, okay what do I do next? The 15 seconds that you have the opportunity to rest in downward dog is like heaven. Constant moving during and through poses allows the muscles in your body to lengthen and strengthen, while improving your flexibility. Don’t get me wrong, this is challenging. Imagine my surprise when the announcement finally came that Chalene Johnson teamed up with Beachbody once again to bring PiYo out of the gyms and into my home fitness library.
PiYo Test Group
At the leadership event in 2013, I had the opportunity to apply to be in the 21 Day Fix test group. They were taking about 20 coaches to get first dibs on the new program, test it out, follow it to a T and be the face and results when the program came out. In my heart, I knew that this was something that I needed. I needed something that was going to motivate me, push me, and keep me on track. I was absolutely heartbroken when I received the “sorry you were not chosen for our test group” email in my inbox. I can’t even explain it, I cried for a few days every time I thought about it or someone posted on Facebook how excited they were to have been chosen. Imagine my surprise when I came home from our cruise exhausted, run down, and still battling motion sickness, to find an email that said “Congratulations, you have been chosen for our PiYo Coach Test Group.” I had just woken up from a recovery nap and I literally JUMPED off of the couch and ran to my computer to read the email in full screen because I thought it was a joke. I screamed and cried like a little girl, it was pretty intense. At that point, I knew that God had been holding out on me with the 21 Day Fix. He knew that there was something that was bigger for me, something that was going to be a great inspiration for me, and what was MEANT for me to do.
I am under contract and unable to share details of the program or any photos of my results along the way. I will however be blogging while I go through the program and will publish them once I am able to do that when we are done with the program. I am very much looking forward to this opportunity and I can promise you that I will not be sugar coating how I’m doing throughout my blog. I have insecurities, I have struggles, and I have triumphs, all of that will be shared with you! I promise to NEVER steer you away from the real me. For now, I urge to you to SIGN UP for the PiYo updates. As more details about the program are released I will be providing those on through the PiYo newsletter and also the official release date when available. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me.
