Why I Am Not Setting New Year Resolutions

RES-O-LU-TION (noun). A firm decision to do or not to do something.

A firm decision to do or not to do something… Just because the calendar says January 1st, does that really make us capable of making a firm decision about the rest of the year? I know I’m not. Hell, I’m barely functioning on New Years Day trying to combat the festivities on New Years Eve. I’m not in any position to be making any firm decisions about anything (other than the classic “I’m never drinking again” #wink).

New Year Resolutions

Who ever made the idea of setting resolutions anyway? We can set goals and intentions, but where did the word resolution ever really come from? I’m not making New Year Resolutions this year and I didn’t last year and I won’t next year. What I will set this year are intentions for 2017.

IN-TEN-TION (noun). A thing intended; an aim or a plan.

Doesn’t an intention sound more attainable than a resolution? There’s wiggle room… There’s feeling behind it… there is a plan…

Lets say you’re setting goals or resolutions, how do you achieve them without a plan? We need to begin with the intention.. the feeling.. the motivation behind what we want to achieve in our lives. Do you know what that feeling you want to achieve is? Do you want more money? How will more money make you feel? What do you want to do with that money? Do you want to take a vacation? What feeling will the vacation give you? Do you want to lose weight? How much weight is going to give you the feeling that you’ve succeeded? How are you going to feel if you fail?

Emotions often attach to outcomes and too often when we “fail” we feel defeated, broken, or we just give up. Resolutions set the outcome before we begin the journey. I’m going to repeat that… Resolutions set the outcome before we begin the journey.

That is why I am not setting New Year Resolutions. I am setting 2017 intentions. I want to have new feelings in the New Year. I want to have new motivations that are deliberate to how I feel in 2017. I want to be inspired by intentions.  I do not want to be influenced by an outcome before I even begin.

Throw out your resolutions and take some time to set your intentions.

Aim for your goals & create a plan.

Happy New Year. #CheersTo2017
