4 & 5 year olds & Technology

by Thursday, March 3, 2011

At the time of writing this my son is 4 years old and he has the most amazing little mind.   Everyday he just literally blows my mind with  what he knows, what he picks up, and what he can do.  Today while I was in the car, I just happen to be listening to the radio (which doesn’t happen often) and the DJ (are they called DJ’s still?!?!?) started talking about the daily research report and the topic was 4 & 5 year olds in today’s day and age.  So of course my ears perked right up and turned the volume up.

Of course it lasted only a few short seconds and I was driving and didn’t have the opportunity to write the information down but the whole time I was like oh man, yes that’s my kid!!! WOW that is unreal.  So of course being eager to share the information, I immediately emailed the radio station when I got to my destination and parked! (YES I swear I wasn’t emailing and driving!) and requested the information be forwarded on to me to share with my husband and other parents, and of course my blog!  They were more than willing to forward the information, that they actually forwarded the recording right on to me it was great.

So anyways, here’s the information and if you are a mom or dad or grandparent of a 4 or 5 year old, think about these statistics for a minute and if they apply to your child!  Basically it was “your child is normal if….. ” – Don’t forget this is only applying to 4 & 5 year olds…

  • 58% of 4 & 5 year olds can play a computer game more readily than the 52% that can ride a 2 wheel bicycle.
  • 63% can turn a computer on and off while only 20% can swim unaided.
  • 69% know how to use a computer mouse while only 11% know how to tie their own shoes
  • 25% use the internet / internet browser and 20% know how to make an emergency phone call.

Now, I find this both interesting and sort of scary, because my son fits everyone of these.  Although, I shouldn’t say that because he now knows how to work mom’s iPhone to call 911 if he ever needs to (which I might add, his dad could probably never figure out how to dial out!!!!).  But still, even that is a technology based thing (being the iPhone).

Please leave your comments below regarding this I’d love to hear your thoughts!!!
